Overview

Homi app overview

Homi is designed to prevent uncomfortable interactions by streamlining the shared responsibilities of living with others. By equally distributing household chores among roommates, the app helps maintain a balanced home with minimal conflict.

Problem & Approach

Sharing the upkeep of a home can turn small tasks into ongoing roommate conflict.

Homi approach interface

Moving in with roommates is a pivotal moment in a young adult’s life, but expectations around cleaning and shared responsibilities are rarely discussed clearly. Resolving these conflicts face-to-face can feel difficult and awkward.

Homi creates a neutral place to assign, track, and complete chores so everyone can understand what needs to be done and who is responsible.

Research

Primary Research

The survey aimed to understand the common frustrations people experience when living with roommates, including the household tasks that are often neglected. It also explored how uncomfortable living situations can affect the overall roommate experience.

97.5%of 40 participants were 18-24 when they lived with roommates
85%of 40 participants had uncomfortable interactions with roommates
83%of surveyors said that their roommates had trouble completing basic chores around their homes

Secondary Research

To supplement my survey findings, I reviewed peer-reviewed research exploring how negative roommate behaviours affect others. One study found that conflict between roommates can contribute to a negative living environment, reinforcing the importance of addressing the challenges that arise in shared living spaces.

Almost half of respondents “reported ‘frequent’ or ‘occasional’ conflict with their roommates or housemates.”

47.9%of sampled students reported frequent conflict with roommates

The Experience

Homi’s core flow keeps shared responsibilities visible to everyone in the house before a task is assigned.

Roommates see what needs doing, who has it, and when it is due.

Interaction

Roommates may not always respond well to being told by others when to complete chores. Homi’s suggested tasks feature helps reduce this friction by presenting chores as app-generated recommendations rather than direct requests from roommates. The shared household interface also allows all roommates to assign tasks to one another, encouraging a more balanced approach to household responsibilities.

Visual Design

Homi was designed to help roommates maintain a clean and organized living space. I chose teal as the primary colour to reinforce a sense of cleanliness and freshness throughout the app. To keep the interface visually clear, I paired it with black and white, creating a sleek, minimal aesthetic that allows the content and key interactions to stand out.
