Verse app overview

Rap lyrics are researched, dissected, and analyzed by millions of listeners. Verse acts as an interactive way for rap enthusiasts to reminisce on their favorite lyrics and find new bars along the way.

Problem & Approach

Separating the lyrics from the music.

Verse approach interface

Without the rhythm of music, lyrics almost become a modern form of poetry. Verse gives opportunity to those who wish to keep the knowledge of rap lyricism alive.

Every day, four bars of lyrics from an individual verse of a rap song are updated in the Verse game. From these four bars, players are required to guess the song it comes from, along with its artist, album, and year of release.

The Experience

Each day, players read four bars and piece together the song, artist, album, and year behind them.

Interaction

Verse’s game structure encourages players to stay engaged, even when they’re unsure of a particular detail. By allowing players to guess the song title, album, artist, and release year in any order, the game supports different approaches to solving each puzzle. Flexible search suggestions and corrections further reduce input friction, giving players more freedom when submitting answers.

Visual Design

The daily puzzle uses a colour-coded system to connect rhyming lyrics, helping players recognize rhyme patterns within each verse. By following these visual cues, players can better understand the intended rhyme scheme and imagine how the lyrics flow when recited aloud.

Design System

These two sets of Figma components were designed to keep Verse’s gameplay engaging while balancing challenge and usability. Album artwork was removed from song input components to prevent players from accidentally revealing the album answer. Early concepts also hid artist names, but initial playtesting revealed that this made songs more difficult to identify. Keeping artist names visible helped strike a better balance between maintaining the challenge and making the game enjoyable to play.
